The University of Denver's hockey team was first formed in 1949. In the 66 years since that first season, the Pioneers have won 16 conference championships and 7 NCAA tournaments. Of the 8 coaches the team has had, 7 have had winning records. The Pioneers have won 11 of the 23 official "Battle of the Gold Pan" series against Colorado College, including the 2015-2016 season so far. 143 DU players have gone on to play professional hockey in the National Hockey League and American Hockey League throughout the last 66 years, with 25 Pioneer Alumni currently playing on professional teams.
The Pioneers play at DU's Magness Arena and are coached by Jim Montgomery.
